Q1: I get a blank login box. What's wrong?
If you are running the SP5 for the first time and the box similar to the one shown below appears, it means that the correct JVM cannot be found on the PC and it cannot locate the correct version to install.

Please go to download Sun JVM by clicking on the link below and save to your computer:
http://www.patsystems.com/Downloads/j2re-1_4_2-windows-i586.exe - Version=1,4,2,0

Q2: How do I install the Sun JVM?
Download it from Patsystems (above) and then just double-click or run the .exe file.

Q3: What version of the Sun JVM can I use with SP5?
SP5 uses Sun JVM version 1.4.2. No other version of the Sun JVM will work e.g. JVM 1.3.1 will not work. Nor will JVM 1.4.2_01

Q4: Do I need to switch off the MS JVM in IE?
Yes. You can switch it off as follows:
Either:
i) install the Sun JVM (which will automatically switch off the MS JVM) or
ii) manually switch it off: ensure that the “Java (Sun) - Use Java 2 vn.n.n_nn for <applet> (requires restart)” setting is ticked, this can be performed by selecting the ‘Internet Options’ setting in the Tools menu of IE and looking under the ‘Advanced’ settings tab.

Q5: How can I check if I already have the right Sun JVM?
In the Windows Control Panel, check that there is a Java Plug-in Icon. Open the Icon and go to the Advanced Tab. Check that the 1.4.2. version is available in the list of available Virtual Machine Versions. It does NOT have to be the default one: so long as it's installed, SP5 will use the right JVM.

Q6: I have more than one Java Plug-in Icon in the Windows Control Panel. Which one am I supposed to use?
Opening any of the Java Plug-in Icons and go to the Advanced Tab. In the drop down called “Java Runtime Environment”, confirm that the version of the Default Virtual Machine used in the chosen Java Runtime Environment is 1.4.2.

Q7: Other ways of getting the Sun JVM?
The correct version of Sun JVM can be downloaded by typing the link below on your address bar: (see below)
http://www.patsystems.com/Downloads/j2re-1_4_2-windows-i586.exe - Version=1,4,2,0
Or, if you prefer, you can download the JVM separately from Sun:
Download from http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/1.4.2/index.html
Note that Sun’s web address is under Sun’s control and may change over time.
Select the following download: "Windows Offline Installation" and "JRE"
Or, you can even ask your own IT Department to make it available to you on an internal network.

Q8: I still need to use the MS JVM with a different application: Can I run both the MS and Sun JVM on the same machine?
Yes, of course. However, when running applets through Internet Explorer, it will be necessary to change the setting that determines what JVM is being used, as detailed above.

Q9: Can I use a different version of the Sun JVM with SP5?
No, it has to be 1.4.2. You may however have multiple versions of the JVM installed on your PC. SP5 will use the correct one, 1.4.2. Having 1.4.2_01 installed as well will be fine.

Q10: Does that mean I have to download SP5 every time now?
Not at all. The SP5 application will only be downloaded if there is a new version available. Whichever html page you use, The version checking process for SP5 has not changed: when you start SP5, it will always download the latest version if it's available, and the installed SP5 program files are still stored on your PC.

Q11: Should I expect any differences in startup time for SP5?
The startup time, from the user launching SP5 until the login window appears is longer than before. This is simply due to the time required for the Sun JVM to load itself up into IE but this is obviously a one-off cost per session.

Q12: Will it work on a different browser? E.g.Netscape/Mozilla/Opera? or does it still need IE?
No, SP5 still requires IE.

Q13: As it doesn't use the MS JVM any more, can it now run on a Mac or on Linux/Solaris?
No, SP5 must still be run on a Windows OS. The supported versions are Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP Home/Professional.

Q14: I can see the login screen prompting for my User ID and password. However, the login button is greyed out.
This is because you have activated firewall protection programs or anti virus protection software. To run SP5, you will need to disable all firewall functions.
